Everyone has low days now and again, but in some cases it can be a much more serious affliction, preventing them getting on with their lives. 7-12% of men and 20-25% women suffer from it. However depression is not an absolute, and has various stages of progression. There are various types of depression (e.g. simple, manic, post-natal).
SYMPTOMS
There are many symptoms of depression, including:
w Variation of mood throughout the day
w Short temper
w Feelings of anxiety
w Disturbed sleep
w Negative thinking
w Lack of energy
w Low self-esteem

CAUSES
Imbalances in body chemistry can cause depression, which can be triggered by a traumatic event or stress. Genetic factors and family history can influence vulnerability to depression.

Most depression (Chittavsada) is caused by a Kapha imbalance that is the culmination of Vata and Pitta going out of balance, and a lack of awareness of one’s inner-self.
