Interstitial cystitis is a chronic inflammatory condition of the bladder, but the term cystitis is often used indiscriminately and covers a range of infections and irritations in the lower urinary system. It is most commonly found in women.
SYMPTOMS
w Burning sensations or pain during urination
w Frequent urination
w Occasional blood in the urine
w Cloudy and foul-smelling urine
w Pain directly above the pubic bone
w Some people may suffer from less concrete symptoms, such as weakness, irritability, falls, confusion, fever, reduced appetite and vomiting
CAUSES
The causes of cystitis are multiple, but can include poor toilet hygiene, congenital deformity in the urinary system, use of a catheter, enlarged prostate (in men), pregnancy, increase in sexual activity for some women menstrual periods and stress can also cause this problem.
DIAGNOSIS
Medical advice should be sought if there is any doubt as to the nature of the problem. Likewise if symptoms persist, do not improve within 48 hours or are recurrent, or if there is blood in the urine or a fever is present, you must consult you’re Ayurvedic consultant or a qualified health practitioner.
AYURVEDIC TREATMENTS
According to Ayurveda, interstitial cystitis appears due to aggravation of vata and pitta dosha. This aggravation produces specific toxins which accumulate in the pelvic region, bladder, urethra and anal region. Ayurveda can provide preventative and curative solutions for cystitis.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES
Pain can be relieved by immersing the pelvis in hot water. Alternatively, heat can applied to the abdomen, by using a towel wrung out in hot water and covering it with a dry towel to retain warmth. Use tea tree soap to wash the area and instead of using toilet paper use diluted tea tree oil to wash.
Yoga Asanas such as Pranayama and the Lotus (Padma asana) can help to pacify the aggravated doshas. Regular meditation can also help your body bring itself back into alignment.
DIETARY CHANGES
w A liquid diet is recommended during the first 3 or 4 days
w Rich, fatty foods should be totally avoided until symptoms have passed
w Intake of juicy fruits, green vegetables, nuts and dairy products should be increased in moderation.
w Radish leaves and spinach in particular can provide relief.
w The following supplements will help the immune system to eliminate cystitis: Calcium Ascorbate, Echinacea, Zinc and B Complex
